Travel awards
Funds are available for partial financial support to students and early professionals presenting at the AFO WOS joint meeting in Newport, RI July 7-9, 2026. This is a competitive application process and applications will be judged, and funds awarded, as described below.
The maximum award is $1000 (US); however, as funds are limited, most applicants will receive partial award amounts. The application process is competitive and applications will be judged based on the quality of the abstract submitted. Funds will be dispersed to awardees in the form of personal checks at the conference.
Please note that this application does not serve as registration for the conference itself nor abstract submission to the scientific program. Registration and abstract submission to the scientific program is required for this award. The applicant must be the individual who will be presenting.

Caregiver grants
These awards are need-based and are intended to facilitate participation of interested parties by defraying part of the cost of caregiving responsibilities that might otherwise be prohibitive.
There is no set maximum award; however, funds will be awarded based on the number of applicants and stated need.
Any conference registrant is eligible (registrant is not required to be a member of AFO or WOS). Priority may be given to early-career (including student) registrants, registrants from underrepresented communities, presenting registrants, registrants who have not recieved a previous caregiver grant, and/or those who are members of either AFO or WOS.

WOS’s Student Presentation Awards
The WOS gives awards to students presenting at the Annual Meeting in several categories:
Alexander Wilson Prize: Awarded for the best paper (usually an oral presentation) presented at the meeting the WOS Annual Meeting with a student as the sole presenting author.
Lynds Jones Prize: Awarded for the best poster at the WOS Annual Meeting with a student as the sole presenting author.
Nancy Klamm Undergraduate Presentation Awards: For current undergraduates who are sole presenting authors of a talk or poster at the WOS Annual Meeting.
AFO’s Student Presentation Awards
AFO AFO is proud to recognize outstanding student presentations at our annual meetings. At the end of the conference, awards will be given for the best student oral presentation and the best student poster presentation (as well as the occassional honorable mentions!). Students can be undergraduate or graduate students and must be the first author/presenter to be eligible for the award.
Margaret Morse Nice Medal
The Margaret Morse Nice Medal is the premiere ornithological award bestowed by the Wilson Ornithological Society. The medal, established in 1997, honors a lifetime of contributions to ornithology.
The recipient is invited to review his or her contributions and their significance to ornithology and science in general as the opening Plenary lecture at the WOS Annual Meeting. The WOS also invites the recipient to publish the substance of those remarks in the Wilson Journal of Ornithology.
This year, the Wilson Ornithological Society will be presenting the Margaret Morse Nice Medal to Dr. David King, Adjunct Professor in the Department of Environmental Conservation at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Both at UMass Amherst and in his parallel career as a Research Wildlife Biologist US Forest Service Northern Research Station, David has studied habitat and land management practices to support migratory birds across their full annual cycle.
